The queue outside the sale - AQ/AQ on Instagram |
1. GO ON THE LAST DAY
Sample sales get new stock in every day so you're unlikely to miss out on anything, plus the last day has bigger mark-downs meaning you'll find a better bargain as well as avoiding the around-the-corner-its-the-first-day-omg-hype queues.
2. HAVE A PURPOSE
Go in with a few items you are looking for; whether it's something you've seen online or even just "I want some new shorts". You WILL end up picking up 100 things you don't need so having something in particular that you want to add to your wardrobe will help you focus and will stop you panic-buying.
3. LOOK EVERYWHERE
In my experience the pricing at sample sales is very sporadic so you can sometimes find two of the same item of clothing and one is £25 but the other is £10. Make sure you look everywhere and not just on the rack where most of the same pieces seem to be! A lot of things get moved around so you can find a bargain somewhere unexpected.
4. ASK PEOPLE
If you see someone with something that you like, don't be afraid to ask where they found it. You'll spend ages trying to look for it on your own and there might not even be any left! In my experience the staff usually know where things are as well (even if the sale just looks like an unorganised mess) and can tell you if something has sold out or not.
5. DON'T IGNORE THE MEN'S SECTION
You can always find better deals in the men's section of any shop, so at a sample sale the discounts are even better. I also find that the men's section is twenty times more organised and nowhere near as busy as the women's area so whether you're looking for something or just want a breather it's the place to be!
6. TAKE PROVISIONS
One thing that is common in every sample sale is the queue. You will spend most of your time queueing; to get in, to look at a certain area of the sale, to try things on, to pay... So take some snacks and a drink because it can be a long, tiring experience and you'll need something to keep your energy levels up and help you grab a bargain.
7. ONLY TAKE A TINY BAG
Keys, wallet, phone, snacks, drink. This is all you need for a sale and all you'll want to carry. Take something that can stay on your shoulder because you'll need both hands for rummaging the rails and for holding all of you bargains. (A bum bag is even better).
8. BE PREPARED TO STRIP OFF IN FRONT OF STRANGERS
Usually the queues for the changing rooms are huuuuggeeeee and sometimes a girl just doesn't want to wait that long. With the sale so busy and crowded most people will ignore you stripping in front of them. Also most of the time the changing rooms are just one or two rooms so you end up sharing with strangers anyway.
9. PICK UP EVERY SIZE
With the changing rooms queues so long, you don't want to leave anything to chance. Make sure you pick up the items you want in a couple of sizes at least; especially if you're not quite sure which one will fit. The last thing you want is to queue for half an hour to try something on and then wish you'd got the size down as well.
10. CHECK EVERYTHING YOU'RE GOING TO BUY
Sample sales = no returns. Make sure that the pieces you're buying are damage free and don't have any stains that look like they won't come out. Most sales have a damaged rail where everything is a lot cheaper which is great if you're handy with a sewing machine, but sometimes these pieces can wander to the rest of the sale so thoroughly check everything before you buy.
So there you have it! Happy sale hunting :)
